4 Different Flower Bulbs to Plant in the Fall

Fall is a great time to plant flower bulbs in your garden, and The Southern Landscape Group can help. There are many different types of bulbs to choose from, so you’re sure to find the perfect ones for your landscape. Let’s explore some of the different ones you can choose from so you can get your landscape ready for spring.

1. Tulips

Tulips are one of the most popular types of bulbs, and they come in a variety of colors, including red, yellow, orange, and pink. They're also one of the earliest flowers to bloom in the spring, so you can enjoy their beauty before the weather gets too hot. To plant tulips, dig a hole about twice as deep as the bulb is tall and place the bulb in the hole with the pointed end up. Keep the soil moist through the winter, and you'll enjoy pretty flowers in the spring.

2. Hyacinths

Hyacinths are another type of bulb that's popular for planting in the fall. These flowers come in a variety of colors, including blue, purple, pink, and white. They have an amazing scent, often signaling that spring has arrived. They're also not tasty for rodents, which means they're great at deterring pests. Hyacinths are reliable perennial bloomers, so you can plant them once and enjoy them for years to come.

3. Alliums

If you're looking for an early spring riser, then alliums are your bulb of choice. These flowers are a relative of the onion and come up before anything else in the spring. However, they do die earlier than others, which means you'll want to plant them along wooded edges, so the dead foliage isn't as noticeable. Additionally, alliums deter rodents, making them great early-spring pest control.

4. Spanish Bluebells

Spanish bluebells, or Scilla siberica, are a type of bulb that's native to Siberia but has been naturalized in many other parts of the world. They're a beautiful addition to any garden, with their striking blue flowers. They're also one of the earliest flowers to bloom in the spring, so you can enjoy their beauty before the weather gets too hot.
